The city is named after Dr. Pio Valenzuela, a hero of the Philippine Revolution who served as the emissary to Andres Bonifacio. The area was primarily agricultural, known for rice farming and fishing, until industrialization in the mid-20th century transformed its landscape. Valenzuela became a city on February 14, 1998.
