Vagharshapat, historically known as Etchmiadzin, is the spiritual center of Armenia and headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church. With approximately 57,000 residents, this ancient city is home to Etchmiadzin Cathedral, considered the oldest state-built church in the world (completed 303 AD).
Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD, and Etchmiadzin was the seat of this transformation. The Catholicos of All Armenians resides here.
