📖 About Timbuktu

Timbuktu is a legendary city at the edge of the Sahara Desert in northern Mali, once one of the richest cities in the world. With approximately 55,000 residents, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was a medieval center of Islamic learning and trans-Saharan gold and salt trade. The name has become synonymous with remote, exotic places.

The city's famous mud mosques and manuscript collections represent Africa's rich intellectual heritage. Recent conflicts have threatened this heritage. Timbuktu represents African civilization—medieval scholarship, trade wealth, and the enduring mystery of a city that captured world imagination.

📜 History

Founded by Tuareg nomads around the 11th century. The city flourished under Mali and Songhai empires (14th-16th centuries). Gold and salt trade brought immense wealth. Sankore became one of the Islamic world's great universities with 25,000 students.

Moroccan invasion (1591) began decline. French colonial rule followed. Independence brought development challenges. Recent jihadist occupation (2012) damaged heritage sites. Today Timbuktu struggles—UNESCO heritage, security challenges, and preservation of Africa's manuscript treasures.
