📖 About The Bottom

The Bottom is the capital of Saba, a tiny Caribbean island that is a special municipality of the Netherlands. With approximately 500 residents, this village sits in a volcanic crater 250 meters above sea level—despite its name, it's not at the bottom of anything. Saba, the smallest inhabited island in the Dutch Caribbean, has just 2,000 total residents.

The island has no beaches but offers world-class diving and pristine nature. The dramatic volcanic landscape features Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Bottom represents Caribbean uniqueness—Dutch governance, English-speaking population, dramatic landscape, and protected isolation.

💼 Economy & Culture

Tourism (especially diving) and government services drive the tiny economy. The Saba University School of Medicine attracts international students. Small-scale commerce serves residents. Dutch subsidies support public services. The economy is limited by size but stable.

Saban culture blends Dutch administration with English language and Caribbean character. Christianity predominates. Saba Lace (drawn threadwork) is a traditional craft. White cottages with green roofs create distinctive architecture. The culture values community, conservation, and the island's "Unspoiled Queen" identity.

📜 History

Carib people likely visited but didn't settle. Dutch colonization began in 1640. The island changed hands multiple times between European powers before permanent Dutch control.

Sugar cultivation was attempted but failed due to terrain. The Road—Saba's main connection—was built in 1938-1958 despite experts claiming it impossible. Today The Bottom is a Caribbean curiosity—Dutch territory, English language, no beaches, and pristine volcanic beauty.
