Teyateyaneng (locally called "TY") is the capital of Berea District in Lesotho, known as the country's handicraft center. With approximately 75,000 residents in the district, this town north of Maseru is famous for traditional Basotho crafts including woven tapestries, pottery, and grass hats. The name means "place of quick sands" in Sesotho.

The town hosts several craft centers where traditional weaving and pottery techniques are preserved and sold. As one of Lesotho's larger towns, TY serves as a commercial center for the district. Teyateyaneng represents Basotho heritage—traditional crafts, mountain kingdom culture, and artisan traditions.

📜 History

The Basotho nation consolidated under Moshoeshoe I in the 19th century. British protection created Basutoland. The area developed as a district center during colonial times.
