📜 History

Cherokee people arrived via the Trail of Tears (1838-1839), forced removal from southeastern homelands. Tahlequah became capital of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. The Cherokee established schools, courts, and government before Oklahoma statehood.

Oklahoma statehood (1907) dismantled tribal government temporarily. The Cherokee Nation reorganized (1970s) with renewed sovereignty. Today Tahlequah thrives—Cherokee capital, university town, and symbol of indigenous resilience and self-governance.
