📖 About Sucre

Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital and the seat of the Supreme Court, a UNESCO World Heritage city at 2,810 meters elevation. With approximately 300,000 residents, this beautifully preserved colonial city is known as "La Ciudad Blanca" (The White City) for its whitewashed buildings. The Bolivian Declaration of Independence was signed here in 1825.

While La Paz serves as the de facto capital, Sucre maintains constitutional status and hosts the judiciary. The pleasant climate, colonial architecture, and university atmosphere make it one of Bolivia's most attractive cities. Sucre represents Bolivia's heritage—independence birthplace, colonial beauty, and highland charm.

📜 History

Founded by the Spanish (1538) as La Plata, the city became the seat of the Audiencia de Charcas. Silver wealth from nearby Potosí enriched the city. One of the Americas' first universities was founded here (1624).

The Bolivian Declaration of Independence (1825) was signed in Sucre, named after independence hero Antonio José de Sucre. The capital moved to La Paz (1899) after a civil war, but Sucre retained constitutional status. Today Sucre is Bolivia's heritage jewel—colonial beauty, independence birthplace, and white city of the Andes.
