Stanley is the capital and only town of the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. With approximately 2,500 residents (about 80% of the islands' population), this remote settlement on East Falkland is the world's southernmost administrative center. Colorful roofed houses and a prominent cathedral characterize the townscape.
The town serves as the gateway for Antarctic cruises and wildlife tourism. Historic shipwrecks dot the harbor. The 1982 Falklands War, when Argentina briefly occupied the islands, remains central to local identity. Stanley represents British heritage at the edge of the world—remote outpost, wildlife gateway, and proud island community.

Fishing licenses provide major revenue—squid fishing rights are sold to international fleets. Tourism (wildlife and Antarctic cruises) is growing. Wool export from sheep farming continues. Government services employ many. Oil exploration potential exists. The economy is prosperous for such a small population.
British culture predominates—English is spoken, and institutions mirror the UK. The Church of England is present. Residents are proud "Kelpers" with strong British identity, reinforced after 1982. Food features lamb, fish, and British fare. The culture values independence, self-reliance, and connection to both Britain and the unique Falklands environment.
Stanley was established in 1843, replacing the original capital at Port Louis. British settlement grew through the 19th century. The town served maritime traffic including whaling fleets. Argentine claims persisted despite continuous British administration.
The 1982 Argentine invasion led to a 74-day occupation of Stanley. British forces liberated the islands in June 1982. The war transformed the islands—military presence, improved infrastructure, and reinforced British ties. Today Stanley is a thriving remote capital—wildlife tourism, fishing prosperity, and proud British identity in the South Atlantic.
