Sóller is a picturesque town in a fertile valley on Mallorca's northwest coast, surrounded by the Tramuntana Mountains (UNESCO World Heritage). With approximately 14,000 residents, this traditional Mallorcan town is famous for its orange and lemon groves, historic wooden tram, and preserved Modernista architecture from the citrus trade era.
The valley's isolation—only connected to Palma by tunnel since 1997—preserved its traditional character. A vintage train and tram connect Sóller to Palma and the Port de Sóller. Sóller represents unspoiled Mallorca—orange groves, mountain scenery, and traditional island life away from beach tourism.

Tourism now dominates—the train, tram, and traditional atmosphere attract day-trippers and longer-stay visitors. Citrus production continues though diminished. Restaurants and accommodation employ residents. Some olive oil production. Sóller functions as a quality tourism destination complementing Palma's beach-focused economy.
Mallorcan culture is strong—Catalan/Mallorquí is widely spoken alongside Spanish. Catholic traditions persist. The town's architecture reflects the prosperity of orange exporters who traded with France. Local food features ensaïmada pastries, sobrassada sausage, and fresh orange products. The culture values tradition, quality of life, and the valley's special character.
Settlement dates to Moorish times, with oranges and lemons introduced during Arab rule. The Christian conquest (1229) brought current culture. The valley's isolation made it self-sufficient. Orange exports to France (19th-early 20th century) brought wealth—the Modernista buildings date from this era.
The railway opened in 1912, linking Sóller to Palma through 13 tunnels. The port tram followed. The Sóller tunnel (1997) ended isolation by road. Today Sóller preserves its heritage—vintage transport, citrus groves, and Tramuntana beauty in Mallorca's most traditional valley town.
