Sisimiut is Greenland's second-largest town, located on the west coast just north of the Arctic Circle. With approximately 5,600 residents, this colorful Arctic settlement is the largest town in Greenland without road connections—accessible only by sea, air, and dog sled in winter. It's the starting point for the famous Arctic Circle Trail.
The town features colorful houses, preserved colonial buildings, and the Kangerlussuarsuk Tulleq mountain backdrop. Sisimiut hosts Greenland's only polytechnic and is known for outdoor adventure. Sisimiut represents Arctic resilience—traditional Inuit culture, modern Danish welfare state, and extreme Arctic living north of the tree line.

Fishing drives the economy—shrimp and halibut processing employs many residents. Government services and education are significant (Greenland's technical college is here). Tourism is growing, especially adventure tourism. Hunting provides traditional food security. The economy depends on Danish subsidies and fishing exports.
Inuit culture persists strongly—Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) is widely spoken alongside Danish. Traditional practices include hunting, kayaking, and drum dancing. Christianity coexists with traditional spirituality. Food features seal, whale, muskox, and fish. The culture balances modern welfare state with Indigenous traditions—Arctic identity in a changing climate.
Inuit settlement dates back 4,500 years—the Saqqaq, Dorset, and Thule cultures left archaeological traces. The current settlement was established by Danish-Norwegian colonizers (1756). Sisimiut became an important trading post for furs and marine products.
The town grew as a fishing and administrative center. Education became a focus with technical schools. Modern Sisimiut is Greenland's most dynamic town outside Nuuk—youth population, outdoor culture, and gateway to Arctic adventure. Climate change brings both challenges and opportunities to this Arctic community.
