📖 About Sint-Niklaas

Sint-Niklaas is the capital of the Waasland region in Belgium's East Flanders province. With approximately 78,000 residents, this Flemish city is famous for having Belgium's largest market square (the Grote Markt, 3.19 hectares) and for hosting the country's biggest Sinterklaas celebrations, befitting its name.

The city has industrial heritage in textiles and is known for the Mercator Museum, dedicated to the famous cartographer Gerardus Mercator who was born nearby. Today Sint-Niklaas is a commercial and cultural center for the Waasland region, with excellent rail connections to Antwerp and Ghent.

Flemish culture is strong—Dutch is spoken. Catholic traditions persist, with Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) celebrations especially significant given the city's name. The culture values community, tradition, and Waasland regional identity.

📜 History

Settlement developed around a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas (hence the name). The town received market rights in the 13th century. The large market square facilitated trade and gatherings. Textile industry brought prosperity in the 18th-19th centuries.

World War I saw significant damage. Post-war reconstruction restored the city. The Peace Festival (Vredefeesten) commemorates liberation. Modern Sint-Niklaas balances heritage preservation with development—Belgium's biggest square, Sinterklaas capital, and Waasland's vibrant center.
