Sidon (Saida in Arabic) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, located on Lebanon's Mediterranean coast about 40 km south of Beirut. With approximately 80,000 residents, this ancient Phoenician city was once one of the most important cities of the ancient Mediterranean, famous for glass-making, purple dye, and maritime trade.
The city retains significant historical monuments including Crusader-era Sea Castle and the old souks. Sidon is Lebanon's third-largest city and serves as the capital of the South Governorate. The city represents Levantine antiquity—Phoenician origins, Crusader fortresses, and thousands of years of continuous habitation.

Trade and commerce continue Sidon's ancient traditions—the souks bustle with activity. Fishing remains important. Some light industry exists. The city is a regional service and administrative center for southern Lebanon. Economic challenges reflect Lebanon's national crisis, though informal economy persists.
Predominantly Sunni Muslim, Sidon reflects Lebanese Arab culture with Mediterranean influences. Arabic is spoken. The city has been relatively moderate religiously. Traditional crafts include soap-making (centuries old) and sweets. Food features Lebanese cuisine—fresh fish, mezze, and regional specialties. The culture values hospitality, commerce, and historic identity.
Settlement dates to 4000 BC or earlier. Sidon was a great Phoenician city-state, rivaling Tyre. Phoenicians invented the alphabet and spread it through trade. The city was conquered by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Alexander the Great. Roman and Byzantine periods followed.
Crusaders held Sidon (1110-1291), building the Sea Castle. Ottoman rule lasted centuries. French mandate and Lebanese independence followed. Modern history includes civil war impact and regional conflicts. Today Sidon preserves remarkable heritage—Phoenician legacy, Crusader monuments, and one of history's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
