📖 About Šiauliai

Šiauliai is Lithuania's fourth-largest city, located in the northern part of the country. With approximately 100,000 residents, this industrial center is best known internationally as the gateway to the famous Hill of Crosses, a powerful pilgrimage site featuring over 100,000 crosses. The city's symbol is the Golden Archer (Saulė).

The city was heavily damaged in World War II and rebuilt in Soviet style. Modern Šiauliai has a university, museums, and serves as a regional hub for northern Lithuania. Šiauliai represents Baltic resilience—rebuilt from destruction, Catholic faith symbolized by the crosses, and Lithuanian perseverance.

💼 Economy & Culture

Industry is significant—leather, textiles, and food processing have long histories. The nearby Zokniai Air Base has brought NATO investment. Education centers around Šiauliai University. Tourism focuses on the Hill of Crosses. Commerce serves the northern region. The economy diversified after Soviet-era heavy industry declined.

Lithuanian Catholic culture is strong—the Hill of Crosses symbolizes faith persistence under Soviet oppression (it was repeatedly bulldozed but always rebuilt). Lithuanian is spoken. Traditional customs blend Catholic and Baltic pagan heritage. Food features cepelinai, dark bread, and dairy. The culture values resilience and religious identity.

📜 History

Šiauliai was first mentioned in 1236, the year of the Battle of Saule where Samogitians defeated the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. The city developed as a trade center. Under Russian rule (1795-1918), leather industry grew.

World War II devastated Šiauliai—85% was destroyed. Soviet reconstruction created the current urban landscape. The Hill of Crosses became a symbol of resistance. Independence (1990) brought NATO ties—the air base hosts alliance aircraft. Today Šiauliai is northern Lithuania's hub—industrial city, crosses pilgrimage, and sun-symbol heritage.
