Shigatse (Rikaze) is Tibet's second-largest city, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China at approximately 3,840 meters elevation. With approximately 120,000 residents, this historic city is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, one of Tibetan Buddhism's most important figures. The city serves as the capital of Shigatse Prefecture.
The magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery dominates the cityscape. Modern Chinese development has transformed the urban area, though Tibetan old town quarters preserve traditional character. Shigatse represents Tibet's religious heritage—Panchen Lama's seat, monastery grandeur, and high-altitude life on the Roof of the World.

Government and services dominate Shigatse's economy. Tourism brings visitors to Tashilhunpo and as staging point for Everest Base Camp. Agriculture includes highland barley and yak herding. Construction has boomed with Chinese infrastructure investment. The economy reflects both traditional livelihoods and state-led development.
Tibetan Buddhist culture defines Shigatse—the Panchen Lama's seat gives it unique religious significance. Tibetan is spoken alongside Chinese. Monastery life continues with monks and pilgrims. Traditional festivals follow the Tibetan calendar. Food features tsampa (roasted barley flour), yak butter tea, and momo dumplings. The culture preserves Tibetan traditions amid rapid modernization.
Shigatse was the capital of Tsang province and historically rivaled Lhasa in importance. Tashilhunpo Monastery was founded in 1447, becoming the seat of successive Panchen Lamas. The city was a major trading center on routes to Nepal and India.
Chinese control was established in 1950. The Cultural Revolution damaged religious sites, though Tashilhunpo survived. Restoration and development followed in later decades. Today Shigatse is Tibet's second city—religious heritage, Himalayan gateway, and showcase of Chinese development on the world's highest plateau.
