📜 History

Sharjah's history stretches back over 6,000 years, with archaeological evidence of human settlement in the area dating to ancient times. The modern city was established in the early 18th century as a fishing and pearling port, becoming part of the Qawasim maritime confederation that controlled much of the lower Gulf. British colonial influence shaped the region in the 19th century, and Sharjah signed protective treaties that would later form the foundation of the Trucial States, precursor to the modern UAE.

In 1971, Sharjah joined six other emirates to form the United Arab Emirates under the visionary leadership of Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, who has ruled since 1972.
