Sentosa is a 5-square-kilometer resort island off Singapore's southern coast, connected to the mainland by bridge, cable car, and monorail. Attracting approximately 19 million visitors annually, this former British military base has been transformed into Singapore's premier leisure destination with beaches, theme parks, and luxury resorts.
The island features Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium, beaches, golf courses, and the iconic Merlion statue. Resorts World Sentosa is a major integrated resort. Sentosa represents Singapore's tourism ambition—tropical escape, entertainment hub, and world-class attractions minutes from the city center.

Tourism and hospitality drive Sentosa's economy—Resorts World Sentosa alone employs thousands. Theme parks, hotels, restaurants, and attractions generate billions in revenue. MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) tourism is significant. Golf courses and private clubs cater to wealthy visitors. The island is entirely dedicated to leisure and entertainment.
Sentosa's culture is cosmopolitan and entertainment-focused—visitors come from across Asia and globally. Singapore's multilingual, multicultural character is reflected in diverse dining and attractions. Events and festivals occur regularly. The island name means "peace and tranquility" in Malay, though today's reality is vibrant entertainment rather than quiet retreat.
Originally called Pulau Blakang Mati ("Island of Death from Behind"), the island served as a British military base. Fort Siloso protected Singapore's harbor approaches. During WWII, the British surrendered here (1942). Japanese forces used it as a POW camp.
Post-independence, the government renamed it Sentosa (1972) and began tourism development. Major expansions came with Resorts World Sentosa (2010), including Universal Studios. Today Sentosa represents Singapore's transformation vision—military island to leisure paradise, drawing millions to Asia's entertainment destination.
