Scranton is a city in northeastern Pennsylvania's Lackawanna County, known as "The Electric City" for being the first to have electric-powered streetcars (1886). With approximately 77,000 residents, this former anthracite coal mining center has reinvented itself as a regional service hub. Globally known as the setting for the TV show "The Office."
The city's coal heritage is preserved in museums and mine tours. Universities bring youth and education. Healthcare has become a major employer. Scranton represents American Rust Belt resilience—industrial past, economic transition, and community spirit in the Pocono foothills.

Scranton's economy has transitioned from coal to services—healthcare systems are major employers. Education (University of Scranton, Marywood University) brings students and jobs. Call centers and distribution facilities have located here. Tourism celebrates industrial heritage and "Office" fame. The economy is diversified but still recovering from deindustrialization.
The culture reflects working-class ethnic heritage—Irish, Italian, Polish, and Welsh immigrants built the coal industry. Catholicism predominates. Local traditions include St. Patrick's Day parade (among America's oldest) and ethnic festivals. Food features pizza (distinctive local style), pierogies, and Italian-American dishes. The culture is proudly blue-collar American—hardworking, community-focused, and maintaining heritage.
The Lackawanna Valley was Lenape territory. Settlement began in the 1770s. Anthracite coal discovery transformed the region—Scranton became a major mining and iron center. The "Electric City" nickname came from pioneering streetcar electrification (1886).
Coal industry decline from mid-20th century brought economic hardship. Population fell from 140,000 (1930s) to current levels. Diversification efforts continue. "The Office" (2005-2013) brought unexpected fame. Today Scranton honors its past—mine tours, railroad museum, and Rust Belt resilience in northeastern Pennsylvania.
