Rajshahi is a major metropolitan city in northwest Bangladesh, located on the banks of the Padma River (Ganges) near the Indian border. With approximately 900,000 residents, this divisional headquarters is known as the "Silk City" for its traditional silk production. The University of Rajshahi is one of Bangladesh's largest.
The city is famous for its mangoes—Rajshahi mangoes are considered Bangladesh's finest. The climate is drier than monsoon-soaked Dhaka. Historic sites including the Varendra Research Museum showcase the region's Buddhist and Hindu heritage before Islamic rule. Rajshahi represents Bangladesh's diverse north—silk, mangoes, and ancient history defining this Padma River city.

Bengali Muslim culture defines Rajshahi—Bengali is spoken, Islam is predominant, and Hindu heritage from the region's past persists in monuments. The culture values education; Rajshahi University has produced notable scholars. Food includes rice, fish, and regional specialties. Mango season brings celebration. The culture is Bengali with northwestern characteristics—distinct dialect and dry-climate traditions.
The region has ancient history—the Pala and Sena Buddhist dynasties ruled from nearby capitals. The Varendra region was culturally significant. Islamic sultanates followed; Mughal rule shaped the later medieval period. The area was known for indigo and silk production.
British colonial rule developed Rajshahi as a district center. East Pakistan (1947) and then Bangladesh (1971) brought independence. The city has grown as a divisional headquarters. Today Rajshahi serves as northwest Bangladesh's major city—silk heritage, mango orchards, and archaeological treasures attracting visitors to this Padma River metropolis.
