Portoviejo is the capital of Manabí Province on Ecuador's central Pacific coast. With approximately 320,000 residents, this agricultural and commercial center serves as the administrative hub for one of Ecuador's largest and most productive provinces. The city was devastated by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2016 but has substantially rebuilt.
The city sits on the Portoviejo River in a fertile valley known for agriculture. Manabí is famous for producing "Panama hats" (actually Ecuadorian), cacao, coffee, and tropical fruits. The coast offers beaches; the province attracts eco-tourism. Portoviejo represents Ecuador's coastal identity—distinct from highland Quito—with its own cultural traditions and agricultural wealth.

Portoviejo's economy centers on agriculture and commerce—the rich valley produces cacao, coffee, cotton, and tropical fruits. Fish processing from coastal catches is significant. Services support the provincial population. Post-earthquake reconstruction has modernized infrastructure. The economy is agricultural and commercial, serving as the market center for Manabí's productive farms.
Manabí culture is distinctive within Ecuador—the montubio (coastal mestizo) identity is proud. Spanish is spoken with regional accent. Catholicism predominates. The culture includes traditional music (pasillo, amorfino), folk dances, and crafts. Food features seafood, ceviche, and coastal specialties. The culture maintains traditions while rebuilding after the 2016 disaster.
Portoviejo was founded by the Spanish in 1535, making it one of Ecuador's oldest cities. The name means "Old Port" though the city is inland. Colonial and republican periods saw agricultural development. The province was known for tagua (vegetable ivory) and Panama hat production.
The April 16, 2016 earthquake killed hundreds and destroyed much of downtown. Reconstruction transformed the city with modern infrastructure, seismic standards, and improved urban planning. Today Portoviejo emerges as a renewed provincial capital—resilient, agricultural, and proud of Manabí identity.
