Portmore is Jamaica's largest dormitory city, located across Kingston Harbour from the capital. With approximately 180,000 residents, this planned community developed from the 1960s as affordable housing for Kingston workers. Connected by a causeway, Portmore has grown to become Jamaica's third-largest urban area.
The city is primarily residential—rows of houses in various schemes (neighborhoods) house families commuting to Kingston for work. Local amenities have developed including shopping centers and schools. Hellshire Beach nearby provides recreation. Portmore represents Jamaica's suburban expansion—working-class families seeking affordable housing within commuting distance of Kingston's employment.

Portmore's economy is primarily residential—most employed residents work in Kingston and commute via the causeway. Local retail, services, and schools provide some employment. Small businesses serve the community. The Hellshire beach area generates tourism and recreation income. The economy is dependent on Kingston's job market and commuter access.
Jamaican culture defines Portmore—English and Patois are spoken, Christianity (various denominations) predominates. Reggae and dancehall music pulse through the community. The culture is working-class and community-oriented. Food includes jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, and Hellshire's famous fried fish. The culture is proudly Jamaican—music, sports, and community spirit thriving in this suburban setting.
The area was sparsely developed marshland until the 1960s when the government planned Portmore as overflow housing for Kingston. Development began in 1968 with various housing schemes (projects). The causeway connected the community to Kingston.
Rapid population growth continued through subsequent decades. Municipal status came in 2003, establishing Portmore as a municipality. Infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population. Today Portmore continues growing—Jamaica's largest bedroom community, with residents maintaining strong community identity while tied economically to Kingston across the harbor.
