Port Mathurin is the capital and only significant town of Rodrigues, an autonomous outer island of Mauritius located about 560 km east in the Indian Ocean. With approximately 6,000 residents, this small coastal town serves as the administrative, commercial, and transport hub for the island's 43,000 people.
Rodrigues is known for its untouched beauty, slower pace, and strong Creole culture distinct from main Mauritius. The town features a busy Saturday market, colonial-era buildings, and waterfront activity. Tourism is growing as visitors discover this authentic island getaway. Port Mathurin represents small-island life in the Indian Ocean—simple, community-oriented, and connected to the sea.

Rodrigues' economy is based on fishing, agriculture, and handicrafts. Octopus fishing is traditional. Tourism is growing, bringing income to small guesthouses and services. Government transfers from main Mauritius support services. The economy is modest but self-sufficient in local produce; remoteness limits industrial development.
Rodriguan culture is strongly Creole—Creole is the main language, Catholicism dominates (unlike multicultural main Mauritius). Music and dance traditions are vibrant. The lifestyle is slower, more traditional. Food features seafood, octopus, and local vegetables. The culture maintains distinct identity—more homogenous and traditional than cosmopolitan Mauritius.
Rodrigues was uninhabited when the Portuguese discovered it in 1528. French colonists arrived in the 18th century, bringing African slaves who became the Creole population. The British took control with Mauritius in 1810.
The island remained isolated and agricultural. Autonomy within Mauritius was granted in 2002, recognizing distinct Rodriguan identity. Development has been gradual; the airport (2002) opened tourism possibilities. Today Port Mathurin serves a growing island tourism sector while maintaining traditional character in the remote Indian Ocean.
