Plzeň (German: Pilsen) is the Czech Republic's fourth-largest city and the beer capital of the world—birthplace of Pilsner, the pale lager style that revolutionized brewing globally. With approximately 175,000 residents, this western Bohemian city combines industrial heritage, architectural beauty, and beer culture. It was European Capital of Culture 2015.
The historic center features the country's largest square and the tallest church tower. The Pilsner Urquell brewery, founded in 1842, gives tours of historic cellars where the original golden beer was created. Škoda Works, founded here, made the city an industrial powerhouse. Plzeň was founded in 1295 by King Wenceslas II. The city prospered through brewing and trade. In 1842, Bavarian brewer Josef Groll created the first Pilsner at the citizens' brewery—the golden lager that transformed world beer culture.
Emil Škoda founded his engineering works in 1859; it became an industrial giant producing arms, locomotives, and machinery. American forces liberated Plzeň in 1945—the town celebrates this annually. Communist-era industrialization continued; the 1989 Velvet Revolution brought democracy. Today Plzeň thrives on its dual heritage—world-famous beer and industrial excellence—welcoming visitors to the home of Pilsner.
