Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), a nation of over 600 islands spread across the western Pacific Ocean. With approximately 5,000 residents, this planned capital was built in the 1980s on Pohnpei Island to house the federal government. It is one of the world's smallest and most remote national capitals.
The FSM comprises four states—Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae—each with distinct culture and language. The nearby ancient city of Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features stone ruins on artificial islands. Pohnpei's lush mountains, waterfalls, and coral reefs offer natural beauty. Palikir represents Micronesian sovereignty—a young nation navigating climate change, migration, and its compact of free association with the United States.
UNESCO World Heritage ruins. Ancient stone city on water.
National government complex. Modern Pacific architecture.
World-class diving. Pristine marine ecosystems.
Lush Pohnpei interior. Waterfalls and hiking.
Dramatic volcanic formation. Historical significance.
Micronesian traditions. Sakau ceremony.
The FSM economy depends heavily on the Compact of Free Association with the United States—funding supports government operations. Government employment dominates in Palikir. Fishing licenses to foreign fleets provide revenue. Subsistence agriculture and fishing support rural populations. Tourism has potential but is limited by remoteness. The economy faces challenges as Compact funding is renegotiated; climate change threatens low-lying islands.
Micronesian culture varies across the four states. Pohnpei has its own language and traditions; the sakau (kava) ceremony is culturally important. Extended family and traditional chiefs maintain influence. Christianity (primarily Catholic and Protestant) is universal but blends with traditional beliefs. Food includes breadfruit, taro, and seafood. The culture is Pacific Islander—communal, respectful of tradition, and adapted to island life. Each state maintains distinct identity within the federation.
Micronesians settled the islands over 4,000 years ago. Nan Madol was built 1200-1500 AD as a royal ceremonial center. Spanish colonization was followed by German rule, then Japanese mandate after WWI. WWII brought intense fighting; Micronesia became US-administered Trust Territory after 1947.
The FSM was established in 1979; Palikir was built as capital. Independence came in 1986 through the Compact of Free Association with the US. The compact provides funding and defense in exchange for strategic access. Today Palikir leads a nation facing existential climate threats—rising seas threaten low-lying islands, prompting migration and international advocacy for climate action.
