The area around Niamey was inhabited by Djerma farmers and fishers for centuries before French colonization. Unlike many African capitals, Niamey was not a major pre-colonial center. The French established a military post here in the 1890s and made it the capital of the Niger Military Territory in 1926, later capital of the colony of Niger. The location on the navigable Niger River influenced this choice. Colonial development was minimal, reflecting France's limited interest in this landlocked, resource-poor territory.

Niger gained independence in 1960 under President Hamani Diori. The following decades saw political instability, droughts, and economic challenges. Military coups occurred in 1974, 1996, 1999, 2010, and most recently in 2023, interrupting attempts at democratic governance.
