📜 History

The area was home to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, whose name the city bears. European settlement began in the early 1800s with farming communities. The villages of Port Credit, Streetsville, and others developed independently.

The Township of Toronto transformed into the Town of Mississauga in 1968 and became a city in 1974. Hazel McCallion served as mayor for 36 years (1978-2014), overseeing transformation from bedroom suburb to major city. Toronto Pearson's growth and highway development drove expansion.
