Matsapha is Eswatini's main industrial hub and home to the country's only international airport, located in the Manzini Region between the administrative capital Mbabane and the commercial capital Manzini. With approximately 40,000 residents, this growing town hosts most of the kingdom's manufacturing and serves as the primary gateway for international visitors to one of Africa's last absolute monarchies.
The town developed around its industrial estate, which hosts textile factories, food processing plants, and other manufacturers that form the backbone of Eswatini's non-agricultural economy. King Mswati III International Airport connects the small landlocked kingdom to the world. The town is functional rather than picturesque, but its strategic location makes it central to understanding modern Eswatini's economy and development within traditional monarchy.
Matsapha offers visitors an introduction to Eswatini's economy, convenient airport access, and a gateway to the kingdom's cultural and natural attractions.

Matsapha is Eswatini's industrial engine. The industrial estate hosts textile and garment manufacturing for export, food and beverage processing, and various light industries. Preferential trade agreements (particularly AGOA with the US) have supported textile growth. The airport handles cargo and passengers, supporting tourism and trade. Service industries have developed to support workers and businesses. The town represents Eswatini's modernization within its traditional monarchy system.
Swazi culture is omnipresent even in industrial Matsapha. SiSwati and English are official languages. The population respects traditional authority—King Mswati III rules as absolute monarch. Traditional dress (particularly the distinctive Swazi emahiya cloth) is worn for ceremonies. Christianity is widespread alongside traditional beliefs. Music and dance remain important; the Umhlanga (Reed Dance) and Incwala ceremonies draw participants from across the kingdom. Food includes traditional dishes like sishwala (porridge). Despite industrialization, Matsapha residents maintain strong connections to Swazi traditions and the monarchy.
Matsapha developed relatively recently as a planned industrial center. The area was selected for development due to its central location between Mbabane and Manzini and relatively flat terrain suitable for industry. The industrial estate was established to diversify Eswatini's economy beyond agriculture.
The airport opened in the 1980s, replacing older facilities and establishing Matsapha as the kingdom's international gateway. Manufacturing grew through trade agreements and investment. The country was renamed from Swaziland to Eswatini in 2018, and the airport was renamed for King Mswati III. Today Matsapha continues to grow as Eswatini's economic hub, balancing industrial development with the kingdom's traditional character under Africa's last absolute monarchy.
