Liberec is the fifth-largest city in the Czech Republic, located in northern Bohemia at the foot of the Jizera Mountains near the Polish and German borders. With approximately 105,000 residents, this former textile manufacturing center has transformed into a winter sports and recreation hub. The city combines industrial heritage with mountain accessibility and technical university presence.

The city's landmark is the Ještěd Tower, a distinctive futuristic TV tower and hotel atop Ještěd mountain, recognized for outstanding architecture. 📜 History

Liberec (German: Reichenberg) developed as market town from the 14th century. Textile manufacturing from the 18th century brought prosperity; the city became the most important cloth-making center in the Austrian Empire. Wealthy merchants built impressive buildings. The largely German-speaking population made the city part of Sudetenland tensions.

Nazi Germany annexed the Sudetenland in 1938; Liberec was briefly incorporated into the Third Reich. After World War II, the German population was expelled; Czechs repopulated the city. Communist era brought state-controlled industry. The 1968 completion of Ještěd Tower created an architectural landmark. Post-1989 transition brought economic restructuring. Today's Liberec develops as regional center and mountain recreation destination while preserving impressive architectural heritage from its prosperous past.
