Grodno is one of Belarus' most historic and beautiful cities, located in the far west near the borders with Poland and Lithuania. Grodno was first documented in 1128 and became a significant city in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth made Grodno an important center; the last session of the Commonwealth's Sejm met here in 1793 before partition. Jewish merchants and craftsmen built a major community. Russian rule from the partitions brought administrative functions but preserved the city's multicultural character.
World War I saw German occupation; interwar years returned Grodno to Poland. World War II brought Soviet then German occupation; the Germans murdered Grodno's 25,000 Jews. Soviet annexation and post-war development preserved most historic buildings while adding Soviet-era districts. Independent Belarus inherited this well-preserved city. Today's Grodno serves as regional capital while its unique heritage attracts visitors seeking Belarus' most European face.
