📜 History

The Ohlone people originally inhabited this area. Spanish missionaries established Mission San José in 1797, beginning European settlement. California statehood (1850) and the arrival of railroads brought development to towns including Niles (where Charlie Chaplin made early films), Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs. These five communities consolidated into Fremont in 1956, named after explorer John C. Frémont.

The General Motors-Toyota NUMMI plant (now Tesla) opened in 1984, bringing auto manufacturing to Fremont. Immigration from Asia accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s as Silicon Valley's tech industry expanded. Indian and Chinese engineers settled in Fremont's affordable suburban neighborhoods with excellent schools. Today's Fremont continues growing as a major center of Bay Area diversity and technology industry activity.
