The Farafenni area has long been significant due to its position on the Gambia River. Before colonial times, various West African kingdoms and trading networks operated in the region. The establishment of The Gambia as a British colony created an anomalous geography—a thin strip of territory following the river, entirely surrounded by French Senegal except for the Atlantic coast.

Farafenni developed as a market town and river crossing point during the colonial period. Independence in 1965 did not resolve the geographic challenges of a country essentially divided in two by the river. The ferry crossing at Farafenni became notorious for delays and disruptions. The 2019 opening of the Senegambia Bridge finally connected the two halves of the country and improved regional links to Senegal. Today, Farafenni continues to grow as a commercial center, its role as a crossroads enhanced by modern infrastructure.
