📜 History

Santo's first inhabitants were Melanesian peoples who settled thousands of years ago. Spanish explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós arrived in 1606, naming the island Espiritu Santo in belief he had found the great southern continent. European contact remained limited until the 19th century, when missionaries, traders, and planters arrived.

World War II transformed Santo dramatically when the US military established a massive base to support Pacific operations. Over 100,000 American troops passed through, building infrastructure that still partially serves the island.
