Eschen is a municipality in northern Liechtenstein, one of the five communes forming the Unterland electoral district. Covering 10.3 square kilometers with approximately 4,630 inhabitants, this charming alpine village traces its name to Celtic origins—derived from "esca" meaning "by the waterside."
Archaeological evidence points to prehistoric settlements in the region, with Eschen established as "Essane" during the Rätic reign in 842 CE. The municipality evolved from a small agricultural community into a vibrant town that has contributed significantly to Liechtenstein's cultural and economic development, producing two Prime Ministers: Josef Hoop (1928-1945) and Gerard Batliner (1962-1970).
Today, Eschen combines traditional alpine charm with modern prosperity. The municipality includes the village of Nendeln, which has a train station on the international Feldkirch-Buchs line connecting Liechtenstein to Austria and Switzerland. Eschen has transformed from its agricultural roots into a modern economic center. ThyssenKrupp Presta, headquartered here, exemplifies Liechtenstein's specialization in high-precision manufacturing. The company produces automotive steering systems for major global car manufacturers, representing the sophisticated industrial base that has made the tiny principality one of the world's wealthiest nations.
The municipality's connection to the international rail network through Nendeln station facilitates both commuter traffic and economic activity. Many residents work in the financial services and manufacturing sectors that dominate Liechtenstein's economy, while maintaining the quality of life offered by the alpine village setting.
Culturally, Eschen celebrates its traditions through annual events like the Eschner Fasnacht, a carnival celebration featuring colorful parades, traditional costumes, and lively music. The Parish Church with its stunning stained-glass windows serves as an architectural and spiritual centerpiece. The first lower secondary school in Liechtenstein opened here in 1906, establishing Eschen's role in the principality's educational development.
Eschen's history reaches back to ancient times, with archaeological findings indicating settlements from the Roman era. The name derives from the Celtic word "esca" meaning "by the waterside," reflecting the area's relationship to nearby water sources. The settlement was established as "Essane" during Rätic rule in 842 CE, making it one of Liechtenstein's oldest documented communities.
The village of Nendeln, now part of Eschen municipality, first appears in written records from the 14th century under various names including Nendla, Endlen, and Anndlen. Throughout the medieval period, Eschen developed as an agricultural community within the patchwork of Alpine territories that would eventually form Liechtenstein. The opening of the first lower secondary school in 1906 marked Eschen's emergence as an educational center. Two of Liechtenstein's Prime Ministers—Josef Hoop and Gerard Batliner—were born here, underlining the municipality's significance in national political history.
