📖 About Entebbe

Entebbe is Uganda's historic colonial capital and gateway to the nation, home to Entebbe International Airport—the country's only international airport. The city sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. A transformative $325 million airport expansion project aims to position Entebbe as East Africa's premier aviation hub, part of Uganda's Vision 2040 strategy.

The modernized terminal, nearing 98% completion by late 2025, will boost annual capacity from 1.5 million to 3.5 million passengers, with a target of 5 million by 2029. In 2024, Entebbe handled 2,243,104 international passengers, up from 1,932,094 in 2023. The airport recorded its highest-ever monthly traffic in August 2025 with 243,089 international travelers. The airport serves 23 airlines flying to 33 destinations across 22 countries.

Uganda will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Tanzania, making Entebbe's airport expansion critical for regional connectivity. New airlines like Flynas launched direct Riyadh-Entebbe flights in January 2025. Uganda Airlines' expanded operations boost the national carrier's footprint. The expansion includes a new airport entrance, enhanced traffic management, and proposed Uganda Airlines headquarters.

📜 History

Entebbe served as British colonial capital of Uganda from 1893 until independence in 1962 when Kampala assumed the role. The 1976 Israeli raid to rescue hijacked Air France passengers became one of the most famous rescue operations in history. The airport has since been the country's sole international gateway.

Post-independence development focused on Kampala, but Entebbe retained importance as the airport city and presidential seat. The 2020s bring major investment in airport modernization and tourism infrastructure. The 2027 AFCON co-hosting signals Uganda's growing regional prominence. Entebbe's future lies in leveraging its airport hub status for broader economic development.
