Encamp is the second most populous parish in the tiny Principality of Andorra, nestled in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. With approximately 12,000 residents, this vibrant town serves as one of the primary gateways to Grandvalira—southern Europe's largest ski resort. Located in the Valira d'Orient valley at an altitude of 1,238 meters, Encamp combines year-round outdoor adventure with Andorran culture and tax-free shopping.
The parish stretches from its main town up to the Engolasters Lake and beyond to the high mountain passes. The iconic Funicamp telecabin connects the town directly to the Grandvalira ski slopes, making Encamp a favorite base for winter sports enthusiasts. In summer, the surrounding mountains offer exceptional hiking, mountain biking, and nature exploration opportunities.
Despite its focus on tourism and outdoor activities, Encamp retains much of its traditional Pyrenean character. Romanesque churches, stone houses, and local festivals preserve the cultural heritage of this mountain community. The National Automobile Museum, showcasing vintage vehicles, adds an unexpected cultural dimension to this athletic town.
This remarkable 6-kilometer gondola lift rises 1,100 meters from the town center to the Grandvalira ski area. One of the longest urban-mountain lifts in Europe, it provides stunning Pyrenean views.
Southern Europe's largest ski domain offers 210km of slopes across six sectors. With terrain for all abilities and modern lift systems, it draws skiers and snowboarders from across Europe.
This beautiful mountain lake at 1,616 meters offers peaceful hiking trails through pine forests. The scenic reservoir and surrounding nature provide a refreshing escape from the valley.
Housing over 100 vintage cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, this surprisingly comprehensive museum traces the history of transportation from steam power to modern vehicles.
This charming 12th-century Romanesque church sits in the village of Les Bons, offering authentic medieval architecture and beautiful frescoes typical of Pyrenean religious art.
Summer transforms ski slopes into world-class mountain biking terrain. The Grandvalira Bike Park and numerous trails cater to everyone from casual riders to downhill enthusiasts.
Encamp's economy revolves around tourism, particularly winter sports and summer outdoor activities. Hotels, restaurants, sports equipment rentals, and tourism services employ much of the local workforce. Like all of Andorra, Encamp benefits from the principality's low-tax regime, attracting shoppers seeking duty-free goods. The Funicamp has been particularly transformative, providing direct ski access that boosted the local hospitality industry.
Despite modernization, Encamp maintains strong connections to Andorran culture. Traditional festivals like the Festa Major in August feature folk dances, traditional music, and community celebrations. The Catalan language predominates, and local cuisine reflects Pyrenean mountain traditions—hearty stews, grilled meats, and dishes like trinxat (potato and cabbage) sustain active outdoor lifestyles. The parish also hosts cultural events including concerts and exhibitions that add depth to its sporting reputation.
Human settlement in the Encamp area dates back thousands of years, with evidence of pastoral communities using the high mountain pastures. The parish developed during the medieval period as a farming and herding community, its economy based on subsistence agriculture and cross-border trade. The Romanesque churches built during this era, including Sant Romà de les Bons, remain testament to the period's religious devotion.
Andorra's unique status as a co-principality (nominally ruled by the French President and Spanish Bishop of Urgell) preserved the region's independence through centuries of European conflicts. Modern development came late to Encamp—the town remained relatively isolated until improved roads connected it to France and Spain in the 20th century. The ski industry transformed the parish from the 1960s onward, and the construction of the Funicamp in 1998 cemented Encamp's position as a premier mountain destination.
