Debre Birhan, meaning "Mountain of Light," is located in the North Shoa Zone of Amhara Regional State, approximately 130 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. The Debre Birhan Industrial Park was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 2, 2019, representing a $71 million Ethiopian government investment.
The industrial park started operations in 2019 with 8 factory sheds covering 100 hectares. Six of the eight sheds were rented to investors from Spain and China, expected to create jobs for 13,000 employees in the textile industry. The park has been converted to a Special Economic Zone under the new SEZ Proclamation, enhancing investment incentives.
Debre Birhan plays a crucial role in Ethiopia's agricultural supply chain. The factories at Debre Birhan and Bole Lemi industrial parks supply malt to Ethiopia's beer producers at 100%, replacing European imports. The Special Economic Zones have created sustainable market connections for more than 90,000 farmers, particularly through beer barley supply. The city represents Ethiopia's push toward manufacturing-led development.

Debre Birhan's economy combines traditional agriculture with modern manufacturing. The Industrial Park Development Corporation has developed 13 industrial parks across Ethiopia, exporting products worth nearly $2 billion and creating over 300,000 jobs. Debre Birhan's textile focus complements the country's reindustrialization strategy.
Debre Birhan culture reflects highland Amhara traditions. The city's name commemorates a divine light witnessed by Emperor Zara Yaqob in the 15th century. Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity shapes daily life and festivals. Traditional weaving, sheep farming, and barley cultivation continue alongside industrial development. The cool highland climate provides pleasant living conditions year-round.
Debre Birhan was founded by Emperor Zara Yaqob in 1456 after he reportedly witnessed a miraculous light, naming the city "Mountain of Light." The city served as an imperial capital during his reign. The nearby Ankober palace complex housed later Shoan dynasty rulers before the capital moved to Addis Ababa.
The 20th century saw Debre Birhan develop as a regional administrative center. The 21st century brought industrial transformation with the 2019 industrial park inauguration. Ethiopia's goal to have manufacturing contribute 20% of GDP by 2025 positions cities like Debre Birhan as development engines. The conversion to Special Economic Zone status signals continued industrial growth.
