Founded as Dinaburg Castle 1275 by Livonian Order. Changed names: Dinaburg, Borisoglebsk, Dvinsk, then Daugavpils from 1920. Russian fortress built 1810-1878 against Napoleon. Uniquely diverse: only 20% ethnic Latvians; Russians 54%, Poles 14%. Tragic WWII historyโnearly entire Jewish community of 16,000 perished. Birthplace of Mark Rothko.
