Major trading center for cocoa and coffeeโIvory Coast is world's largest cocoa producer. Chief collecting point for forest region exports including kola nuts and timber. Local trade hub for rice, cassava, yams, and bananas. Several sawmills and food processing facilities. Known as agricultural powerhouse of western region.
Founded by Gboto (Bรฉtรฉ tribe) and Dalo (Guro tribe). Became French military post in 1903. Bรฉtรฉ and Guro peoples remain most numerous, alongside Baule, Diula, and Mossi immigrants. Cultural center for traditional music including Zouglou genre. Bรฉtรฉ language widely spoken. Known for religious diversity with churches and mosques.
