📖 About Cetinje

Cetinje is the former royal capital of Montenegro, known as the "Old Royal Capital" (Prijestonica). Founded in the 15th century, it served as the capital until 1946 when administration moved to Podgorica.

The city remains home to several national institutions, including the official residence of the President of Montenegro. Its historic core is on the UNESCO Tentative List.

Surrounded by Mount Lovćen and bordering Lake Skadar National Park, Cetinje offers a unique blend of royal heritage, religious significance, and natural beauty.

The Petrović dynasty ruled Montenegro for 222 years, and their legacy continues to define Cetinje's cultural significance.

📜 History

Cetinje was founded in the 15th century by Ivan Crnojevic, who moved his capital here for its defensive advantages. It became the cradle of Montenegrin culture and independence.

The city officially became the capital of independent Montenegro in 1878. The Petrović dynasty established numerous embassies and cultural institutions during this era.

After World War II in 1946, the capital moved to Titograd (now Podgorica), but Cetinje retains its title as "Old Royal Capital" and its symbolic importance.
