Celje is Slovenia's third-largest city and a regional center of the traditional Styrian region. Located at the confluence of the Savinja, Hudinja, Ložnica, and Voglajna rivers, it sits 238 meters above sea level.
The city was once the seat of the powerful Counts of Celje, the only dynasty to achieve princely status in Slovenian lands. Their mighty castle remains one of Slovenia's most important medieval fortifications.
Since 2016, Celje has been a certified Slovenia Green Destination, recognized for its environmentally friendly approach to tourism and sustainable development.

Settlement in the Celje area dates to the Hallstatt era. Under Roman rule from 15 BC, it was known as Civitas Celeia and called "Troia secunda" (the second Troy) due to its prosperity.
From 1333 to 1456, Celje was the feudal capital of the Counts of Celje, the most powerful medieval dynasty in Slovenian lands. Their three-star coat of arms is now part of Slovenia's national emblem.
Celje became part of independent Slovenia following the Ten-Day War in 1991. Today, it preserves its medieval heritage while developing as a modern, green European city.
