Brades is the de facto capital of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It became the seat of government after the Soufrière Hills volcano destroyed the former capital Plymouth in 1997.
Located in the safe northern zone of the island, Brades serves as the administrative and commercial center. The town hosts government offices, businesses, and essential services for Montserrat's small population.
Montserrat is known as the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" due to its Irish heritage and lush green landscapes. Despite the volcanic destruction, the island has been rebuilding and developing its northern areas.

Montserrat's economy relies heavily on aid from the UK government and remittances from Montserratians abroad. Tourism, particularly volcano and eco-tourism, is being developed as a sustainable industry.
The island has a unique cultural blend of Irish and African Caribbean heritage, a legacy of 17th-century Irish indentured servants and African slaves. St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday.
Despite its small size, Montserrat has a rich musical heritage. The island's contribution to reggae and calypso music continues, and AIR Studios' legacy attracts music enthusiasts worldwide.
Montserrat was colonized by Irish and English settlers in 1632. The island's Irish connection remains strong, reflected in place names, the shamrock on passports, and St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
The Soufrière Hills volcano began erupting in 1995 after being dormant for centuries. The 1997 eruption buried Plymouth under volcanic ash, forcing two-thirds of the population to evacuate.
Since the volcanic crisis, Montserrat has been rebuilding in the northern safe zone. Brades emerged as the de facto capital, while a new town called Little Bay is being developed as the future official capital.
