Borgo Maggiore is the second-largest town in San Marino after Dogana, with a population of nearly 7,000. Together with San Marino's historic center and Mount Titano, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
Originally called Mercatale ("marketplace"), the town has been San Marino's most important market center since the 12th century. From 1879 it was renamed Borgo Maggiore, meaning "largest village."
The town is the base terminus of the famous Funivia di San Marino cable car, which connects to the City of San Marino above.
