Bor is a historic city and the capital of Jonglei State in South Sudan, situated on the eastern bank of the White Nile (Bahr al Jabal River) at the southern extent of the Sudd, Africa's largest wetland.
The city holds immense historical significance as the birthplace of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), which led the struggle for South Sudan's independence achieved in 2011.
Bor is the homeland of the Dinka Bor people and serves as the administrative, educational, and economic center of Jonglei State, the country's most populous state.

Bor's economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and livestock. The region has the highest concentration of cattle, goats, and sheep in South Sudan, reflecting the pastoral traditions of the Dinka people.

An ivory trading depot was established at Bor in the 1860s, and it grew into a regional hub. In 1874, Charles George Gordon established a government station, and in 1905, Bor became the headquarters of Bor District under Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.
Bor is the epicenter of South Sudan's liberation struggle. In May 1983, the 105 Battalion staged a revolt at Malual-Chaat garrison, leading to the birth of the SPLM/SPLA movement that would eventually achieve independence.
South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011, after 22 years of liberation struggle. Bor's role in this history makes it one of the most historically significant cities in the young nation.
