Bokhtar, formerly known as Qurghonteppa or Kurgan-Tyube, is the capital of Tajikistan's Khatlon Region and the country's third-largest city. Located 100 kilometers south of Dushanbe, it serves as a vital administrative and economic center.
The city was officially renamed to Bokhtar in 2018, reflecting Tajikistan's cultural heritage. The name derives from ancient Bactria, the historic region that encompassed this area in antiquity.
Bokhtar is one of Tajikistan's most ethnically diverse cities, home to Tajiks, Uzbeks, Russians, Pashtuns, Tatars, and various Turkic peoples.

Bokhtar developed as Tajikistan's cotton center during the Soviet era, with extensive irrigation systems transforming the region into productive agricultural land.
Today, the city remains an important agricultural hub while also serving as the administrative capital of Khatlon, the most populous region of Tajikistan.
Cultural life reflects the region's diverse heritage, blending Tajik, Persian, and Central Asian traditions with influences from the ancient Bactrian civilization.
The Bokhtar region has been inhabited since at least the 2nd millennium BC, with traces of ancient Bactrian settlements found nearby. A Buddhist monastery from the 7th-8th century at Ajina Tepe demonstrates the area's rich religious history.
The modern city developed during the Soviet period in the 1970s-80s as an agricultural center. During the Tajik Civil War (1992-1997), the city suffered significant damage as the epicenter of conflict.
Since the war's end, Bokhtar has rebuilt and developed as a regional center, with the 2018 renaming symbolizing a connection to the area's ancient Bactrian heritage.
