Bafoussam is the capital of Cameroon's West Region and the third-largest city in the country after Yaoundé and Douala. Located in the Northwest Highlands at 1,400 meters elevation, the city serves as the commercial and cultural hub of the Bamiléké people. The 2nd Bafoussam Development Forum (FODEBAF) was held January 18-25, 2025, under the theme "Fostering Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Development."
The 2025 Development Forum featured Germany and Brazil as guest countries of honor, signaling Bafoussam's international ambitions. Mayor Roger Tafam emphasized positioning the city as a "hub for opportunities and business," capitalizing on its economic potential. The 2025 state budget allocated over FCFA 49 billion for road upgrades including the Douala-Bafoussam and Foumban-Koupa Matapit routes.
The West Region has made culture and tourism its development pillars, with a Regional Tourism Office created—the only one of its kind in Cameroon. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2022) brought state-of-the-art infrastructure including modern sports facilities, roads, hospitals, and hotels. Authorities are now leveraging these assets to attract investors and promote tourism in the Bamiléké highlands.

Bafoussam's economy centers on agriculture, commerce, and emerging tourism. The Bamiléké people are renowned throughout Cameroon and West Africa for their entrepreneurial spirit and business networks. Coffee cultivation, food processing, and trading drive the local economy. The 2025 Development Forum aims to attract investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, and services sectors.
Bamiléké culture is expressed through elaborate chieftaincy traditions, secret societies, and distinctive art forms including wooden sculptures, beaded thrones, and traditional textiles. The region's festivals celebrate harvests and ancestral connections. The Bamiléké architectural style—with its carved pillars and thatched roofs—influences regional design. Cameroon's motto "Unity in Diversity" finds expression in Bafoussam's cultural richness.
The West Region has been home to Bamiléké kingdoms for centuries, with traditional chieftaincies maintaining authority over their communities. French colonial rule consolidated administrative control in the 20th century, with Bafoussam becoming a regional center. Following Cameroon's independence in 1960, the city grew as the official capital of the West Region.
The Bamiléké diaspora, driven by population pressure and economic ambition, spread throughout Cameroon and beyond, establishing commercial networks that remain influential today. Modern Bafoussam transformed with AFCON 2022 infrastructure investment. The 2025 Development Forum marks a new chapter, positioning the city as a tourism and investment destination while preserving its cultural heritage.
