Axum (also spelled Aksum) is an ancient city in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region that once stood at the heart of one of Africa's most powerful historical kingdoms—the Kingdom of Axum. Active from the 1st century AD, Axum rose to prominence as a wealthy commercial hub, a center of religious importance, and a cultural beacon that left a lasting imprint on African history. UNESCO recognized its exceptional value by designating the archaeological site a World Heritage Site in 1980.
The city is most famous for its towering funerary obelisks—monolithic granite stelae carved with great precision, some reaching over 20 meters in height. The Great Stele stands over 23 metres and weighs almost 520 tonnes, making it one of the biggest single slabs of stone ever mined by human hands. The most renowned Obelisk of Axum was taken to Italy by Mussolini but was returned to Ethiopia in 2005 and re-erected on its original site.
Ethiopia is undergoing economic reform, with the government opening the economy and encouraging private investment including in tourism and hospitality. Ethiopian Airlines' expanding routes are making the country easier to reach, while world-class cultural sites remain relatively undeveloped and far from overexposed. For travelers and investors, Ethiopia positions itself as both partner and product: a country with serious reforms and untapped tourism potential.

Axum's economy centers on agriculture, religious pilgrimage, and growing cultural tourism. The city serves as a market center for the surrounding farming communities. Ethiopia's broader economic reforms are attracting investment, with the government prioritizing infrastructure and tourism development. The reopening of Axum to tourists following the Tigray conflict represents hope for economic recovery.
Axum is the spiritual heart of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The Ark of the Covenant legend—believed kept in the Church of St. Mary of Zion—makes the city sacred to Ethiopian Christians. The annual Hidar Zion festival draws thousands of pilgrims. Ancient traditions, Ge'ez liturgical language, and medieval manuscripts connect modern Ethiopians to their Aksumite heritage. Coffee ceremonies and traditional cuisine reflect the broader Ethiopian cultural experience.
The Kingdom of Axum flourished from approximately 100 AD to 940 AD, becoming one of the ancient world's great powers alongside Rome, Persia, and China. At its height, Axum controlled trade routes connecting Africa, Arabia, and the Mediterranean. The kingdom minted its own gold coins and converted to Christianity in the 4th century under King Ezana, becoming one of the first Christian states.
According to Ethiopian tradition, the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Axum by Menelik I, son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The kingdom declined after the 7th century as Islamic expansion altered trade patterns. Modern Axum experienced the Tigray War (2020-2022), but peace has returned. The obelisks stand as eternal testaments to Axum's ancient glory, awaiting rediscovery by a new generation of travelers.
